Mayor joins Trayvon Martin rally on Plaza

Local attorney and Kansas City Mayor Sly James recently participated in a rally regarding the controversial Florida shooting death of young Trayvon Martin.

Attended by hundreds, a common theme at yesterday’s rally protesting the actions of Martin’s killer, George Zimmerman, was a  call for Zimmerman’s arrest.

Mayor James urged participants to coalesce around the issue in racial harmony.

Kansas City’s rally occurred on the Plaza and was part of a nationwide call to join together in protest on Monday.

James urged members of the crowd to grab someone’s hand from another race.

Mayor-attorney declares Kansas City’s “Greatest Mission”

Kansas City Mayor Sylvester “Sly” James, Jr., a local attorney at Kenner Schmitt Nygaard, LLC, recently announced Kansas City’s Greatest Mission: to get all Kansas City children reading at their grade level by the third grade.

Citing humanitarian and economic concerns, James relies on years of longitudinal studies that reveal the importance that early childhood development plays in improving a city’s economic development and decreasing a city’s crime.

James calls Kansas City’s Greatest Mission his biggest economic priority, bigger even than Google Fiber.

Kansas City attorney Judy Heeter is coordinating the campaign.

Missouri House approves school district takeover authority

Proponents of efforts to remove control of the Kansas City Missouri School District (KCMSD) from the current board received a victory yesterday.

The Missouri House unanimously approval legislation to allow the state to immediately replace the KCMSD board with a new governance structure and representatives.

The bill will go to the Missouri Senate, where a similar bill was passed in committee last week.
