In the age of austerity, Kansas looks for more cost effective alternative to prison

Kansas prisons are already over capacity. It’s men’s prison is currently 266 inmates over capacity and projected to be short 2,000 beds in 10 years. The women’s prisons will exceed capacity in 7 years.
State officials are considering every option including early release and drug treatment diversion to bring down the state’s expense.

KC Chief Kyle Orton sues Chicago Law Firm
Kansas City’s newest quarterback is suing a Chicago law firm alleging that he and other investors suffered millions of dollars from partnerships that failed to provide anticipated tax benefits.
Orton, in a complaint filed yesterday in state court in Chicago, accuses Chuhak & Tecson PC of misrepresentation and negligence over advice on investments in oil and gas partnerships that were designed to grant tax credits. He and a co-plaintiff seek to represent other investors in a class-action lawsuit.

Andrew Leroy wins Appeals Court argument to inject new life into Busch wrongful death suit
Andrew Leroy, of Monsees, Miller, Mayer, Presley & Amick, represented the mother of Adrienne Martin, a woman who died of a drug overdose at the mansion of former Anheuser-Busch CEO August Busch IV, infront of the Missouri Court of Appeals, asking the Appeals Court to allow Martin’s parents to join her 9-year old son in pressing Busch for damages.
Today’s decision will give Martin’s parents a signifiant voice in determining legal strategy, including the decision on accepting or rejecting a $1.5 million settlement offer.

Judd Treeman joins Husch Blackwell litigation team
A former Associate in the Houston office of Seyfarth Shaw, Judd will join the Litigation Department.
